Hiking Boots
It is recommended that a trekker wear firmly cushioned hiking boots for gorilla trekking in Uganda. The geographical features can be rugged including slopes and undergrowth and at some times the ground can be swampy. The terrain gives the impression that one needs sturdy boots to be able to traverse it safely, and this will be offered by good hiking boots. Waterproof boots are especially helpful, because then your feet will be dry at least in case if you get wet from the rain or if you have to cross some stream. Pre-wear of the boots is recommended since it reduces the chances of getting blisters during the trekking experience.
Rain Jacket
The climate in Uganda is a rainforest type whereby it can rain at any time even during the so called dry season. A versatile and concise piece of gear would be a light and preferably waterproof rain jacket to keep you shielded from the sudden showers. Choose a jacket with decent air circulation as hiking tends to be tiring sometimes. The rain jacket should also be durable in order to endure the tussle with branches and vines in the forest that can easily catch on the clothes.
Insect Repellent

Insect repellent of high quality must be used to avoid being bitten. Select an insect repellent which either DEET or any other effective ingredients contained by it. The wearing of long-sleeved shirts, long pants is very important for several reasons. They offer shield from the hot sun, mosquitoes and flying and prickly insects, and from thorn bearing shrubs. It is preferable that they remain slender and airy because they will provide insulation against pests while guaranteeing the physical barrier against all manner of environmental insults. Hides and earthling colors such as green and brown should ideally be used so as to minimize on attracting insects. Moreover, when in a little hostile environment, it is advisable to tuck your pants into your socks to avoid insect menace running up the whole length of your legs.
Backpack
Having an adequate yet strong and comfortable backpack for accommodating your equipment’s is very important while trekking. It should be big enough to accommodate water, foods, a first aid kit and change of clothes etc.; but it should not be very big to cause inconvenience. Learn for a backpack with padded shoulder straps and a padded belt for weight distribution of the backpack. Other characteristics that are also desirable include the waterproof or even water-resistant material to help shield the contents from rain and moisture.
Water Bottle or Hydration pack
To avoid frustrations during the trekking of the gorillas, it is important that one drinks a lot of water before, during and after the activity. Take a reusable water container with the capability of holding at least over two liters of water. A hydration pack with a tube enables one to take water without having to pull off the backpack and open the pack. Since this weather is very hot, you can sweat a lot that is why it is recommended to drink more water often. Another common tip applies to those who lose a lot of minerals, replenishing them with the help of an addition of electrolyte tablets to the consumed water.
Camera and Extra batteries
It is so possible that while on a gorilla trek one is able to capture these great apes on the natural habitat. A good quality camera that comes with a zoom lens will enable you take photos of the gorillas at close range without having to the physical contact with the gorillas. Please do not forget spare batteries, memory cards and similar utilities as one does not want to be left out of a delightful shot due to a technical hitch.
